A group of students from Nova Hreod College have been
experiencing working life as part of a new initiative from BT.
The Work Inspiration programme aims to change the way
young people think about work. It combines team building activities such as constructing towers from paper and tape to meet exacting
specifications. These activities develop key employability skills such
as leadership, communication and team skills.
Claire Wills, Enterprise and Work Related Learning Lead for Nova
Hreod College said “I have been very impressed with the quality of the Work
Inspiration programme offered by BT. It is important for young people to gain
meaningful work experiences with professionals in real environments. The scheme
is designed to support students in developing skills that they will value when
they are trying to enter the workplace.”
The students also spend time with engineers learning
about the skills needed for modern day engineering.
Claire said “We are delighted that BT were able to
offer a Work Inspiration week for a group of year 11 students
studying Engineering.”
The programme also offers young people insight sessions
designed to aid self- awareness, identify personality type, and explore what
roles might suit them in an ever-changing world, as well as an opportunity to
interview volunteers from BT to understand how careers progress and see the zig
zag path that careers often take.
The programme was brought to the south west through a
partnership between BT and Connect South West.
Ann Phillips, Head of EBL for Connect South West said “We
are delighted to be working with BT in order to bring the programme to the
South West.
"Working with BT on this programme has been a
delight and it shows that big companies are willing to invest in the future of
our young people and we are hoping to repeat this activity elsewhere in the
south west. I hope that this will be the start of a growing partnership over
the year"
Katy
Haggarty, BT Work Inspiration Manger said “I would like to take this
opportunity of thanking Connect South West for going the extra mile in
supporting us. They have been really enthusiastic about the event and
I hope this will be the start of a really proactive workingrelationship"
